CAME for a holiday . . . happy to stay forever. That's the path Adelaide's "Soul Master" Dwight Adams's life has taken.
Back in 2001, Dwight came to Australia from San Diego for a holiday, but then September 11, 2001, happened. He couldn't get a return flight home.
In the meantime, he crossed paths with Adelaide icon Roger Cardwell, who heard him and booked him for an appearance on AM Adelaide.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Tonight, Dwight launches his Soul Master CD at the Gov. The man with the voice that makes women swoon and men jealous, says he found it difficult to narrow the list down for the CD.
"We chose 150 songs," Dwight says with a laugh.
"(The song) Love and Happiness was my number-one choice in the end, but there's plenty of other great songs, like The Love Train. "
Dwight is even thinking The Love Train might be released as a single. "I think it could be a big hit worldwide. It's such a happy song, it could be an anthem, because of the state the world is in right now."
Throughout his stellar career, Dwight has worked with, and alongside, many of music's greats - Spencer Davis, Marvin Gaye, even Billy Joel.
"Billy and I are both from Long Island, and started out around the same time. We passed each other in clubs a lot."
Despite a huge fan base and his track record, Dwight says it's still tough to be seen these days.
"Adelaide used to be the mecca of music - not right now - but that'll turn. It's hard to get gigs, because people may not be sure what I'm doing. Tonight's audience at the Gov certainly will.
"It's a show for the ladies," Dwight says with a cheeky smirk. "It's for everyone, the kind of music you can put on and everyone will be happy."
And for the blokes of Adelaide who might be in the bad books for forgetting Valentine's Day, Dwight has a present just for you.
"I'll have a song that I'll sing - they can tell their girls they told me to sing it to them." How sweet.
